Demand has not decreased on frozen tilapia despite the 11.5% rise in price for frozen tilapia fillets seen on Urner Barry in December, but considering this is a low demand period of the year, only time will tell how long this high price level holds.
Whether it will hold, however, is less of a consideration than whether it will increase, indicates Jason Carter, the New Zealander who co-founded China-based tilapia producer Elite Seafood.
“There is talk now that pricing delivered to packers could go as high as CNY 6/500g or $2.00/kg,” he toldUndercurrent News, referring to frozen fillets. That would be a 7.1% increase over current pricing, and he predicts it could happen soon.
